Terms to know and understand when dealing with the media

Angle the approach on a story
   
B/g (Background) term for general description and explanation of a story and it's fruition
   
Beat up a story that is wildly exaggerated or sensationalized
   
Blurb a slang term meaning glossy propaganda material
   
Break to be first to cover a story
   
By-line author's name on a story

  ground only)

  over and are for cutting purposes
   
Round a term given to the are to which a reporter is assigned i.e. political round, police

Source the provider of the information for a story
   
Story media term for all written articles and broadcast pieces
   
Stringer a freelance journalist who files for many organizations and is available at short
  notice to cover stories in places where the media organization has no representative.
   
Story conference time of the day when c.o.s. gathers all reporters editors to discuss the stories of
  the day and which will be covered and what angles are being taken, in some news papers a further afternoon conference occurs to renegotiate stories especially if there is late breaking news which will push other stories off for priority.
   
Sub-editor a senior journalist who edits copy for errors, style deviations, length and adds

Slug words or and numbers on the first line of a story to uniquley identify that story
   
Talent television and radio term for guests or interviewees
   
Talking-heads Interviews with only people talking, no other action.
   
Teaser a short compilation of footage made up as a trailer to get the audiences attention,
  to pointer to a story coming up
   
2-shot a shot with 2 people in it e.g. the interviewer and the talent
   
Wire service electronic news service
   
Wrap the end of a shoot, (not the end of a days shooting in a long shoot, but said by the
  director only after the very last shot of the film / script in the can
   
Wrap party a party where all the cast and crew are invited to celebrate the end of the movie
  shooting, before post production begins.
